New homes in Leeds

Leeds is one of the biggest employers in the UK after London itself. Historically, Leeds used to be a part of West Riding of Yorkshire in the fifth century. It changed from being a manorial borough in the thirteenth century to a small wool-producing town in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The most major developments in Leeds came during the Industrial Revolution when this trading town became the hub for trade and industry like printing, flax and engineering. Since then, Leeds has been one of the most major economic and industrial hubs of the United Kingdom.

Living in Leeds Today

Leeds today is the capital of the Yorkshire and Humber region, commanding a population equal to that of Scotland or Denmark. Leeds is a city and a metropolitan borough located in West Yorkshire. It is one of the important spots in West Yorkshire Urban Area because of its cultural, financial and commercial activities. It is these activities that increased the population of Leeds by 2009 to exceed 700,000, therefore making it the 30th most populous city in the European Union. To accommodate this regular growth, Leeds dates all the way back to the fifth century when the area was covered by the forest of ‘Loidis’, which is the origin of the word ‘Leeds’. After the forest started receding, the area became known for the production and trading of wool. Then, once the Industrial Revolution rose, Leeds became one of the main industrial centres in the country, especially for engineering, printing and iron production. As for today, the city is gaining fame for its public administration, education, finance, retail and health sectors.
